Some people are confused with the terms used by Hosting companies for the different account types available. I thought I’d give a quick description of two account types: The Basic Hosting Account and Reseller Account.
Hosting Account
A basic hosting account is used to host a single web site on shared web server. Depending on the hosting company, you can make different domain names bring up the same web site. So if you have ilovehobbits.com and ilovehobbits.co.uk you can make both domains use the same hosting account and thus display the same website. Note: We would recommend making one of the domains redirect to the other, otherwise it will look like you have two identical sites with different domain names, which isn’t good for search engines.
Reseller Hosting Accounts
A reseller hosting account is used to host multiple different web sites on the same shared web server. The reseller account is able to create and control multiple client hosting accounts, like the one previously described. Each hosting account being isolated from the others.
With reseller hosting you can decide what features and how much disk space/Internet bandwidth each client hosting account can have. They can all have the same or each one can have totally different features and size limits.
Reseller accounts tend to have a fixed monthly cost based on the total amount of disk space required. Since each client hosting account is separate a reseller account is ideal for web designers/developers or IT support companies that wish to offer hosting to their clients.
Summary
Hosting accounts are single accounts to host a single website.
Reseller hosting accounts are for users who want to create multiple hosting accounts for different people.
